If you own a local attraction or business then now is the time to think about designing your leaflets and having them printed, well in time for the summer months. The Easter and summer holidays are two very busy times of the year, as families from all over the UK pay the Norfolk countryside a visit. Designing a leaflet for your business can be a stressful task but with our advice and tips, you will have more of an idea on what you need to create the perfect leaflet.
If you want your leaflet to be noticed and chosen from the sea of other leaflets you find in your local tourist information point, then follow these hints and tips:
- Demographic: You need to make it clear what your leaflet is for. Decide what your goals are so you can run through them throughout the design process, making sure you're on target when it comes to printing your ideal leaflet. It's really important to work out who your audience is, so designing a modern and sleek leaflet might not appeal to people of a certain age. Make sure everything is targeting the right audience that includes everything from copy and pictures through to the style and content.
- Key message: Your leaflet will no doubt be competing with many other leaflets but if there's something unique and different about what you're selling, draw attention to it in the headline. Try and keep it short and snappy and if possible make sure the top third of the leaflet conveys the key message as, in some leaflet racks, that's the only part of the leaflet a customer can see.
- Picture perfect: the power of imagery is very vital to a leaflet and reinforces the message, so make sure they're appropriate to your audience and display exactly what you want to sell. Adding a map to your leaflet is very important as well as avoiding cluttered images.
- Short and snappy: As much as you might want to, your leaflet can't contain everything you want to say about your attraction or business - be selective. Ensure your copy is easy to read and keep sentences short whilst breaking up blocks of copy by using small paragraphs. Using headings are really useful as it helps your customers find what they are looking for easier.
- Use colour: Research shows there's a 50-70% increase in retention of full colour leaflets over black and white. Customers seem to prefer a full coloured leaflet as they tend to keep hold of them for longer.
- Size matters: Depending on what you're using your leaflet for and where it is going to be displayed, means you need to figure out what size your leaflets are going to be. Most leaflets tend to be A5 (folded down from A4 or A3 size) or DL size (1/3 A4 folded). If the leaflets are for a local attraction then producing leaflets this size should make them fit in nicely with most information leaflet racks.
- Offers and vouchers: adding a voucher or offer in your leaflet will give your customers even more of an incentive to pick up your leaflet. Make sure you advertise them in a clear and easy place for your customers to find them or use the whole back page as the voucher, so they can keep it as a reminder.
- Contact information: It is absolutely vital that you check through your leaflet and make sure all of your contact information is correct i.e, phone numbers, addresses, maps, opening times and website addresses, otherwise, if these are wrong customers will have a struggle trying to find you.
- Proof reading: Check your copy again and again – and get someone else to have a look too. Spelling mistakes and bad sentence structure can be off putting for readers and will think you haven't put much love into your leaflet. Before you send it to the printers, make sure you see at least a PDF version before you send it over, mistakes are easy to rectify before they're printed, but not so easy afterwards.
