Typography: Selecting the Right Typeface

Posted on 10/02/2015
When it comes to designing your project or advertising campaign, choosing the right type for your text is crucial and a key aspect. It is always a good idea to do some research before you jump in and pick any kind of typeface. Whether it takes a few hours or a few days, it's a smart investment. Picking the right type will pave the way for an effective design solution and save time in the long run. There are a few key factors to consider when you're searching for an appropriate text typeface:
  • Demographics: One of the most important things to consider is who your intended audience is going to be, this could include their age range or particular interests. Whether you are selling a product or a service, or providing information or entertainment, your choice of typography has to engage the audience. For instance, if you selling high tech products, a clean and professional typeface would be appropriate and give it a modern edge, whilst a children's magazine would need simple typeface, making it easier for a beginner reader to read.
  • Legibility: Attracting the reader's attention is essential, so make sure the typeface you choose for text is legible and easy to read. You can use more decorative and eye-catching designs for headlines, titles and other more prominent usages.
  • Copy length: If your project is a book or magazine then the typeface you select will be used to set lengthy copy. For this reason, the importance of required legibility is far greater than if the typeface was being used for just a few lines or a paragraph. If you are dealing with shorter copy, a typeface with a bit more personality can be used as the reader's attention is less likely to be distracted.
  • Font family size: Think about the project's or advertisements typographic requirements, and decide beforehand how large you want the font to be to meet all of your typographic needs. Make sure there are enough weights and versions of the type you want to use, ensuring you have covered your typographic needs.
  • Special features: Make sure the typeface you have chosen has all the additional features such as small caps, fractions and multiple figure styles, just in case you need them.
  • Choice of medium: If you decide to choose print over web media then your font search will be simpler. However, if it is needed for the web, smart phones, or other uses, you will need a typeface that is available and appropriate for all usages, and performs well in all required environments.
The key to finding your perfect typeface for your text is to do your research first. This will help you narrow down your choices to those that meet your needs of the job and get the right message across.
