Using the A series paper sizes to plan your catalogues

Posted on 18/07/2013
The size of the paper we print on is something that most people wont give much thought to. When it comes to printing at home we are accustomed to using an A4 printer, some may even have an A3 inkjet printer. But have you ever asked yourself how the A series paper sizes can be used in the planning of your printed marketing campaign? If you are planning to send out printed magazines or catalogues, the cost of postage is something you might want to consider, which is why the A series is useful for determining weight. If the weight of your chosen paper is 80gsm (80grams per square metre, the area of A0), then a sheet of A4 will be a sixteenth of this (16 A4 sheets from 1 sheet of A0), 5grams. Using this as an example we can determine that a 200 page A4 magazine printed on 80gsm paper will weigh just over 1kg, allowing for covers and binding. Reduce your paper weight to 70gsm and only put 160 pages in your magazine and you can save up to a third on weight and reduce your postage costs.
