When designing a poster to advertise an event or a promotion, there are certain principles that you should bear in mind. You want your poster to attract the eye and to be legible from a distance. The best way to achieve this is to pay careful attention to the following five design elements.
1. Image
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Choosing a striking image for your poster is the best way to grab the attention of your desired audience. The imagery that you choose should be influenced by the audience that you want to attract.
2. Typeface
If you are going to tell people where and when your event or promotion is taking place, then your poster is going to need some words on it. The typeface is the design of the letters that you use to make up those words.
3. Colour
Think about the symbolism of the colours you choose. For instance, a bold red is strongly associated with love – perfect for your Valentine’s Disco poster. Various colours and combinations have political or religious significance that you should bear in mind - don’t use purple and yellow to advertise your support the refugees campaign.
4. Contrast
Some colours complement each other and others clash. The contrast between colours – especially between the colours of your typeface and background – are an important consideration. Especially if you would like your poster to be read from a distance.
5. Empty Space
It’s very easy to think that every single square inch of your poster must be covered in information, images and writing, but there is a lot to be said for empty space on a poster. The human mind finds it hard to take in information that is presented in too busy a fashion. Better to be clear and concise and have the relevant information sink in – than to include absolutely everything and have people remember none of it.
